Scanpaths: the path to understanding abnormal cognitive processing in neurological disease.

Full Abstract

Scanpaths, the sequence of saccades and fixations during visual search, provide the means to study a range of cognitive activities:
planning, visuospatial attention, and spatial working memory. By measuring scanpaths, we have been able to identify impairment of working memory in patients with spatial hemineglect. Scanpaths during cognitively demanding tasks indicate a defect of working memory in patients with Parkinson's disease. Studies of scanpaths in patients with homonymous hemianopia have provided the means to develop a new strategy for visual rehabilitation.
